Sure Tubby kept tapes too (some may have been for him to use for other purposes than originally as part of some deal), but the music was not really his (except of course the music that he actually produced later on). "Tubby's catalog" is really a misnomer, Tubby and his apprentices (mostly them actually) mixed the music, but the music itself (and then consequently the resulting tapes, or at least their content) were not his, the music belonged to the producers that enlisted his services (so in this case Ranking Joe), and would then (hopefully) end up with them, so his work (or the work from his studio) would be all over the place. I bought it last time there was a Black Friday sale, it was around back then, seems to be more scarce now. If there is a vintage UK and/or US pressing those are usually preferred over Jamiacan pressings, that is probably the only blanket statement that can be made, and even having said that there can be very bad pressings done in for example the US and there can be early Jamaican pressing that are just as good as anything else.Īs to recommendations, lot of the time these things have been done before if you search, there is for example a Dub-specific thread here: Beginners DUBĬlick to expand. Not sure how easy it is to find, it says it is a US release, but it seems to mostly have been available here in Europe. For example for genre specific labels like Trojan and Greensleeves, both based in the UK, there really only are the pressings from that country, this will be the case a lot of the time with smaller labels. With a lot of other stuff that wasn't released internationally like that with pressings in different countries, the choices are limited anyway and what is preferred will be case specific. For the bigger UK based labels like Island and Virgin, where there actually are several simultaneous pressings made in differnt countries, it is probably true that UK pressings are the best, but not necessarily the only way to go at all (it of course depends how picky you are). You can't make a blanket statement like "UK pressings are the only way to go", just as in all other cases with recorded music it will depend. (Did you check out the suggestions in that other thread? I made a post there too.) I've mostly avoided King Tubby, because what is actually Tubby let alone which pressing to get is probably worthy of it's own thread, so initially perhaps stick with what's on Blood & Fire.Ĭlick to expand.Ok, I think I got the distinction and tried to answer accordingly, but Reggae isn't exactly as popular as The Beatles on this forum, so I'm not sure several subject specific threads at once work, as seen you got mostly the same kind of replies as in the previous thread again, maybe better to keep it focused. That should give you some ideas of what direction to explore. Lee Perry "Megaton Dub" 1 & 2, original pressings are much better than the current ones. Yabby You "Beware Dub" ideally get the Grove, but the Pressure Sounds is okay. Prince Jammy/ Sly & Robbie "Uhuru In Dub" and "Osbourne In Dub" CSA Records. Sly & Robbie "Reggae Greats" Island, cheap, but excellent. Sly & Robbie "Raiders Of The Lost Dub" Island, excellent comp of their Dub versions, reissued with extra tracks as "Time Warp Dub Clash" in the nineties. Hugh Mundell/Augustus Pablo "Africa Must Be Free by 1983 Dub", get the eighties UK Greensleeves, also pick up the vocal companion.Īny of the Dub releases on Blood & Fire, Horace Andy, King Tubby, Keith Hudson, Scientist etc. Jah Shaka, similar to Mad Professor he kept Dub alive, numerous pressings, but all pretty similar quality, slightly lower than Ariwa, but still fine. Mad Professor/Ariwa is another producer who kept Dub alive during the eighties and nineties, start with his "Dub Me Crazy" series, some have recently been repressed, I'm not sure if they are as good as originals, but at least they are cheap. On-U Sound, Adrian Sherwood went his own way musically, but there's some excellent Dub in the On-U catalogue and all original On-U pressings are decent, (MPO in France), perhaps try an early Dub Syndicate LP such as "Tunes From The Missing Channel" to get an idea. Prince Far I's Cry Tuff Dub series 1 - 4 Pressure Sounds reissue is fine for 1, OG Virgin Frontline for 2 and Daddy Kool for 3, 4 is the weakest, but an OG Trojan is the way to go. Scientist, any of the Greensleeves LPs, the Greensleeves and later VP/Greensleeves reissues with vocal cuts and altered credits are all fine. "Super Ape" any UK Island pressing from the seventies or eighties. Click to expand.A few UK pressed Dub suggestions:
